Knowledge
Purpose of Research: To develop a new perspective of knowledge and its role in the current
and future environment; to study the properties of knowledge in order to increase the
probability of successful decisions and actions by individuals and organizations.
Knowledge is defined as the capacity (potential or actual) effective action. We often add
"in varied and uncertain situations" to emphasize the fact that we are talking about
people—knowledge is within people. The mind/brain is always anticipating the future. The
information which we seek (which we call knowledge) is basically what needs to be done, how
to do it and doing it (all three) that results in effective action, that is, a desired end result. All
knowledge is information; all information is not knowledge.
Because knowledge drives every single decision we make, it is critical to learn about and
understand what knowledge is. Meta-knowledge or knowledge about knowledge is essential to
our ability to manage and apply knowledge most efficiently and effectively.

and Action (2 PowerPoint slides)
We explore a theory of knowledge that is both pragmatic and biological. Pragmatic in
that it is based on taking effective action, and biological because it is created by humans via
patterns of neuron connections in the mind/brain. The advantage of clear definitions of
information and knowledge is the consistency, ease and precision of communication, and
potential insights they may provide in their applications.
