Knowledge Mobilization
Purpose of Research: With a focus on Social Sciences and Humanities, to expand the
understanding of collaborative entanglement in the role of application of research findings
within stakeholder communities.
Knowledge Mobilization (KMb) is the process of creating value or a value stream through the
creation, assimilation, leveraging, sharing and application of focused knowledge to a bounded
community. In terms of social sciences, this entails the effective creation, movement and
tailoring of knowledge from its source (researcher or expert) to its application (practitioner,
community leader, community) such that consequent actions are effective and sustainable.
This can best result if a resonance exists or has been developed so that there is a flow of
shared understanding among all stakeholders and the means and opportunities to move
community-based needs to enhance subsequent research-based knowledge development.
Overview of Knowledge Mobilization (PDF, 7 pages)
For several additional papers related to KMb see the Knowledge Mobilization area of the
Publications section. Also see the papers in the Social Knowledge area .
While Knowledge Mobilization is still fairly young, there are Guiding Principles (PDF, 2
pages) which represent relevant tendencies and suggest a flavor of the nature of KMb. Since
knowledge is situation-dependent and context sensitive, each principle is a rule of thumb that
may or may not provide insight into a specific application.
Wisdom is the desired outcome of the Knowledge Mobilization process. See the paper "From
Knowledge to Wisdom; From Ordinary to Extraordinary Consciousness" in the Consciousness
area of the Publications section.
The Knowledge Mobilization research has been published as a hardcopy book available
from MQIPress. Chapters include: Exploring KMb, Theory and Approaches, The KMb Program
and Process, The KMb Activities Model, Involving and Evolving Students, Execution in the
Action Space, Outcomes and Impacts, The KIS of SSHRC, Power Plus Comes of Age. The book
includes extensive appendices that provide examples of KMb efforts in the areas of events,
publications, meta-tools, sustainability and KMb and Students. An eBook will be downloadable
from Amazon Kindle in Spring 2013.
Key Definitions
Entanglement is the mixing, entwining and random associations of ideas and concepts among
people. Collaborative entanglement includes the execution and actions that build value for
all stakeholders, whether for a community, an organization, or a nation.
Knowledge is the human capacity (both potential and actual) to take effective action in varied
and uncertain situations.
Knowledge Mobilization is the process of creating value or a value stream through the creation,
assimilation, leveraging, sharing and application of focused knowledge (such as a university
research outcome) to a bounded community (such as a community hospital).
